Earlier this month, as awards season was just gearing up, Ben Stiller sat down with director Ryan Coogler following a screening of “Sinners” at the DGA Theater in New York to discuss the genre-bending period spectacle.

At the top of the conversation that touched on thematic, technical, and performance-related aspects of “Sinners,” the two filmmakers spoke about how the loss of Coogler’s blues-loving Uncle James inspired the film, which features a battle royal between the operators of a Delta juke joint and a group of vampires. Growing up in Richmond, California, Coogler would walk to his uncle’s house to hear the older man talk about baseball and growing up in Mississippi while blues records played in the background, which became the foundation of a lifelong intimacy. After Uncle James died from cancer in 2015, while Coogler was in post-production on “Creed,” the director spent years struggled with the moments…
