Ryan Gosling speaks out on theater crisis amid ‘Project Hail Mary’ success
Ryan Gosling has shared his honest thoughts about the state of movie theaters in Hollywood amid the success of his latest film, Project Hail Mary.
The 45-year-old Canadian actor, who plays a science teacher tasked with saving the planet from a dying sun, surprised fans at a packed New York movie theater, where he spoke about cinema in the age of streaming, as seen in a clip shared by Sony Pictures Australia on Instagram.
“Six years ago, I got the manuscript. [It’s] the most ambitious thing I’ll ever make; it seemed impossible. It was too good not to give it a shot,” Gosling said while discussing Project Hail Mary, which has recorded the biggest box office debut of the year so far.
He added, “Here we are, we’re all back in theatres. It’s not your job to keep them open, it’s out job to make things that make it worth you coming out.”
“You’re about to go to another galaxy, make an alien best friend and save the stars. This movie is for you. Enjoy the trip!” the Barbie star said, earning a round of applause from the audience.
Despite signs of improvement, the film industry has yet to fully recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, with box office earnings holding at around $11 billion annually, still below pre-pandemic figures.
How big was Project Hail Mary’s opening weekend?
Released on March 20, 2026, Project Hail Mary earned $140.9 million at the global box office in its opening weekend, making it the biggest success for Amazon MGM Studios so far.
