“What’s Up?” has become an earworm for a new generation after a remix of the 4 Non Blondes 1992 hit blew up on TikTok – and frontwoman Linda Perry has joined in on the trend.
More than 695,000 social media users have posted videos of themselves lip-synching to the mashup of the San Francisco group’s song and Nicki Minaj’s “Beez in the Trap,” created by TikTok user @dj.auxlord. Though it was shared in August, the snippet went viral earlier this month.
Most recently, Perry teamed up with pop star and “Kiss of the Spider Woman” actor Jennifer Lopez for a rendition.
In the video, shared to Perry’s Instagram on Monday Oct. 27, the singer begins by lip-syncing to her original pre-chorus (“And so I wake in the morning and I step outside/ And I take a deep breath and I get real high/ And I scream from the top of my lungs/ ‘What’s going on?’) while wearing her signature black tall-crowded bowler hat.
When Minaj’s chorus begins (“Bitches ain’t s-, and they ain’t say nothin’/ A hundred motherf-ers can’t tell me nothin’/ I beez in the trap, bee-beez in the trap”), Perry moves aside to reveal Lopez sitting on a swivel chair behind her draped in a leopard-print coat. The “On the Floor” singer goes on to mouth the rap lyric to the 2012 track.

The trend has sparked a 460% global spike in Spotify streams for Minaj’s track and a 75% boost for 4 Non Blondes.
Perry told Rolling Stone last week that she found the remix “ridiculous in all the best ways.”
“I think everyone is trying to get Nicki and me to do one together,” she said in the interview published on Thursday, Oct. 23. “It would be fun, and the best part is? ‘I love Nicki Minaj!'”
Earlier this year, 4 Non Blondes reunited after 30 years at BottleRock Napa Valley. They’re scheduled to return to the Bay Area on Dec. 17 for an intimate performance at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall.
The rock outfit – originally composed of Perry, bassist Christa Hillhouse, guitarist Shaunna Hall and drummer Wanda Day – was founded in the late 1980s, but broke up in 1994 shortly after releasing their debut album, “Bigger, Better, Faster, More!” due to internal tensions.
Day died in 1997 and Hall has since departed from the group. Now, the lineup features Roger Rocha on guitar and Dawn Richardson on drums.
