Released on 10 April 2026, the track blends Afrohouse rhythms with layered melodic elements, drawing on themes of acceptance, spontaneity and emotional release. The song continues Batundi’s focus on atmosphere-driven production, where rhythm and mood are prioritised as much as structure.
“This song is about letting go of expectations and just living in the moment,” he said. “Sometimes things don’t go as planned, but there’s something beautiful in that.”
Musically, ‘Upside Down’ is built on deep percussion and warm, textured layers, creating a steady and immersive sound. The record features contributions from Manu WorldStar, who adds melodic elements, and The Big Hash, who brings a more contemporary rap influence to the track.
Batundi said the production process was largely instinctive, beginning with rhythm and developing organically from there.
“I started with a vibe, something that felt light and free,” he said. “From there, everything just came together naturally, almost like the song created itself.”
He added that maintaining simplicity was one of the key challenges in completing the track.
“The hardest part was keeping it simple but still powerful,” he said. “Not overcomplicating it, just letting the feeling come through.”
Rather than following a traditional narrative structure, Upside Down is framed as a mood piece centred on emotional openness and present-moment awareness. Batundi has described the track as an invitation for listeners to let go of control and embrace change.
“I want people to feel free, positive, and inspired,” he said. “It’s about enjoying the journey, even when things feel upside down.”
The release builds on Batundi’s established Afrohouse sound while signalling a shift towards a more expressive and fluid approach to production. His earlier work has similarly focused on the intersection of rhythm, introspection and dancefloor energy, but ‘Upside Down’ places greater emphasis on atmosphere and emotional clarity.
Batundi is expected to release additional material throughout 2026 as he continues to develop his evolving sound.
