As 2025 comes to a close, Sabrina Carpenter is reflecting on her year—and the romantic relationship she left behind. The singer recently reposted two TikToks in which the user wrote, “It’s been a tough year, but at least I didn’t get back with my ex.” Carpenter has been publicly single since news of her breakup with Barry Keoghan came out in December 2024, following about a year together.
On Dec. 4, 2024, a source told Entertainment Tonight, “Things didn’t end well, and they are taking space from each other. Sabrina and Barry are definitely broken up right now. Sabrina isn’t sad over the breakup and is staying busy and distracted.”
A few months later in March, Carpenter appeared to take a playful jab at Keoghan during her Short n’ Sweet Tour show in Dublin, the Irish actor’s hometown.
“Dublin, it’s so lovely to be here. You all look and sound amazing,” she said, via The Mirror. “But my goodness, these Irish boys are hard work.”
By the end of the summer, Carpenter addressed speculation about her music videos and songs referencing her and Keoghan’s romance during an August CBS Mornings interview. “I just wouldn’t say [who the lyrics are about],” she said. “It’s more fun to picture the person in their head than the person I picture in my head, I think.”
While promoting Man’s Best Friend, Carpenter spoke broadly about her love life in interviews, but avoided discussing Keoghan or anyone she has dated specifically.
In September, she told NPR that she drew on her love life and far-from-finished healing journey while writing Man’s Best Friend.
The vibe of the album was “How can I be so self-aware and yet so blind and so stupid at the same time?” she said. “Women are the smartest and the dumbest, in my experience. It’s like they are dumb exactly when they want to be. I think that that’s kind of a theme that I tackle throughout the whole album, just because it’s a little bit more about the reflection of my own choices and these relationships and how I get into them and how I get out of them. I think even with my last record, it was sort of like there was a little bit more spite towards people. That hurt my feelings. And I think this one was a little bit more like, you know what? Can’t be that mad because I am putting myself in these positions to kind of experience these things. So yeah, I think it’s just like 2 percent healed, which gives me a lot more room to grow.”
She echoed that theme of growth while talking to Interview in July. She admitted her type was “man children”—and that the lessons they taught her have been necessary.
“That’s the thing I’m trying to get across—it’s not just those people finding you, it’s you allowing them to find you,” she explained. “It’s taking accountability, like, ‘Oh, damn, my type always leaves me in distress.’ But in reality, I’m allowing myself to be left in distress. I’ve been going through that the way I’m supposed to right now. I’m young-woman-ing the way that I need to young-woman at this very moment. I can’t speak for myself in a few years, but right now I think I’m supposed to be learning from mistakes and finding light in the fact that not everything works out sunshine and rainbows. You know?”
