Sabrina Carpenter Makes Her Grand Ole Opry Debut

Sabrina Carpenter has officially made her Grand Ole Opry debut! Performing as part of the institution’s centennial celebration, the pop star turned on the twang for a 20-minute set full of countrified versions of her biggest hits. With the help of the Opry band, she reimagined the likes of “Please Please Please” and “Manchild” with string instruments, adding fiddles, a banjo, and a steel guitar. In between, she debuted “Go Go Juice” and sang “Slim Pickins,” two of her more country-inspired tunes.

Introduced by Sheryl Crow, Carpenter beamed in front of the audience, interacting with the crowd and even asking one fan if she made a piece of art herself. After the concert-goer replied that she made it with her mom, Carpenter melted, expressing how “wholesome” it was in Nashville. That’s why, she joked, she kept things clean with the radio-friendly versions of her songs.

“My mom raised me on the artists that have stood up here,” Carpenter shared. “Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn and, of course, my favorite, Dolly Parton.” The pop star, who previously collaborated with Parton on a playful remix of “Please Please Please,” has been vocal about the legend’s influence on her over the years, often even wearing her merch. She said, “So much of making my newest album was a pedal steel, a banjo, and a dream.”

With her appearance, Carpenter joined a stacked lineup of performers who have graced the Grand Ole Opry stage—and a shorter, but still mighty, subset of pop stars who have had the honor. For the occasion, Carpenter picked out the sparkliest black gown—a one-shoulder number with a skirt made out of tassels that danced as she did.
