Savannah Guthrie will return to NBC News’s “Today” show in April, two months after the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie.
She will return to hosting the show on Monday, April 6. Savannah Guthrie explained her decision in an interview with NBC’s Hoda Kotb that aired Friday morning.
“It’s hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness,” she told Kotb. “I can’t come back and try to be someone that I’m not, but I can’t not come back because it’s my family.
“I think it’s part of my purpose right now,” Guthrie continued. “I want to smile, and when I do, it will be real, and my joy will be my protest. My joy will be my answer, and being there is joyful.”
The Guthrie family last saw Nancy Guthrie at her home in Tucson, Ariz., on the evening of Jan. 31, and they reported her missing the following day, after she failed to show up for church.
A months-long investigation led by the Pima County Sheriff’s office and the FBI scrutinized several purported ransom letters, thousands of submitted tips and evidence from Nancy Guthrie’s home. The county sheriff said he believed she was “abducted.” However, no substantial leads were made in the case.
Savannah Guthrie said during a clip from the interview released earlier this week that her family is in “agony” following their mother’s disappearance.
“I wake up every night in the middle of the night, every night. And in the darkness, I imagine her terror. And it is unthinkable, but those thoughts demand to be thought,” Savannah Guthrie said. “And I will not hide my face. But she needs to come home now.”
She said in Friday’s interview she is determined not to let her mother’s captors “take my joy.”
“They will not take our faith, but our anguish is real,” Savannah Guthrie said. “We need help. We need someone to tell the truth. I have no anger in my heart. I have hope in my heart, I have love, but this family needs peace.”
