Savannah Guthrie declared to the potential kidnappers of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, that the family is willing to pay the ransom. The TODAY show anchor posted a video on her Instagram on Saturday, February 7, regarding the disappearance of her mother. It’s day seven in the search for Nancy.
In the video, Savannah was joined by her two siblings — Anne and Camron — as they held hands. The video was captioned, “Bring her home.” Savannah said in the 22-second video: “We received your message, and we understand. We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”
Jason Pack, a former FBI special agent and crisis negotiator, spoke with the Daily Mail about the use of “celebrate” in Savannah’s speech and what the one-word phrase means in the context of negotiations and ransoms. “The word ‘celebrate’ stood out to me immediately. Savannah didn’t say ‘surrender her’ or ‘give her back.’ She said return her so we can ‘celebrate’. That’s the language of resolution, not confrontation. In any negotiation, you want to offer the other party a way to see this ending positively and peacefully for them too,” Pack explained. It comes after an expert revealed a chilling truth that the kidnapper is “known to the family.”
Pack, an former FBI agent of 25 years, also noted that within his experience in crisis negotiations, “the most dangerous moments come when communication breaks down. The Guthries are doing everything they can to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
This all comes as a Tucson TV station KOLD 13 reported on Friday, February 6, that they received a new message linked to Nancy’s case and forwarded it to law enforcement. Authorities stated they are aware of the new message and are checking its authenticity.
“The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department are aware of a new message regarding Nancy Guthrie. Investigators are actively inspecting the information provided in the message for its authenticity,” Pima County authorities said in a statement.
The second message appeared a day after Camron made a video on behalf of the family as they issued another plea to Nancy’s potential abductors and asked them to reach out as well as give proof of life.
“This is Camron Guthrie. I am speaking for the Guthrie family. Whoever is out there holding our mother, we want to hear from you. We haven’t heard anything directly. We need you to reach out, and we need a way to communicate with you so we can move forward. But first, we have to know that you have our mom. We want to talk to you, and we are waiting for contact,” he said.
KOLD 13 first received a ransom note on February 2. TMZ reported receiving a ransom note on February 3 demanding millions in Bitcoin. The Pima Sheriff’s Department and the FBI said they were aware of the notes and were evaluating their credibility at the time.
Nancy has been reported missing since Sunday, February 1, when she didn’t attend church service. She was last seen on Saturday, January 31, when she went to dinner at a family member’s home and was dropped off at 9:48 pm. Pima Sheriff Chris Nanos said in the timeline that the garage door opened at that time and closed at 9:50 pm. At 2:28, her pacemaker app shows there’s a disconnect from the phone.
Authorities have said they don’t have a suspect or a person of interest in the case so far.
