Scarlett Johansson Styles Statement Belt in Balmain on Stephen Colbert

Scarlett Johansson revived the Y2K-era statement belt in a black midi dress by Balmain for her appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on Monday in New York City.

For her appearance on the late-night talk show, the two-time Oscar-nominated actress and Prada’s latest campaign ambassador wore pieces from Balmain’s pre-fall 2025 collection by creative director Olivier Rousteing. The strapless midi dress featured a sweetheart neckline with subtly exposed seaming near the bust.

The dress incorporated other details, like a slit at the back and a bold black statement belt with gold hardware that created a defined silhouette. The piece was highly reminiscent of the Y2K trend, which featured statement belts at the waist on “going-out tops,” blouses and dresses alike.

As for the rest of her look, Johansson wore strappy black heels and accessorized with jewelry by Sidney Garber, including a gold coil necklace and bracelet. Johansson’s hair was styled by Renato Campora, with makeup provided by artist Hung Vanngo. The actress’ look was curated by award-winning stylist Kate Young, who also works with Dakota Johnson, Michelle Williams and Julianne Moore, among others.

Balmain’s pre-fall 2025 collection debuted in Paris in December, offering a pared-back curation of wardrobe essentials. Creative director Olivier Rousteing’s “pre-fall collection was brimming with gold buttons: an agglomeration of hundreds on a minidress that would look sensational on South African singer Tyla, or just a handful lined up neatly on terrific cotton poplin shirts, and on cropped tweed jackets so light they have a bit of swing,” Miles Socha wrote in WWD’s review of the collection.

“Rousteing plied a mostly neutral palette, offering such wardrobe builders as perfectly tapered black trousers; a blanket-like, batwing camel opera coat; a meaty black leather parka with four military pockets, and those strong-shouldered blazers that have become a house signifier, here done up in black lace for a frothier effect.”

Johansson is promoting her directorial debut, “Eleanor the Great.” The film follows Eleanor (June Squibb) after she suffers a devastating loss and embarks on a surprising journey. The film is in theaters Friday.
