The Duke of Sussex is weighing a return to the UK with his family, with any visit dependent on the outcome of a dispute over his security arrangements.
Prince Harry is expected back in Britain in July for a series of engagements, but uncertainty remains over whether his wife and children will accompany him.
Those close to the duke say he wants to spend time with his father, King Charles, and would welcome an invitation to stay at Sandringham.
A visit to the Norfolk estate is seen as one option that could allow the Sussex family to reunite on British soil.
The duke has made clear he will not bring his children to the UK without what he considers adequate protection.
Harry lost access to publicly funded police security after stepping back from royal duties in 2020.
He has since challenged that decision through the courts and is awaiting the outcome of a fresh review.
“If he was invited by the King, he would get a package of security that automatically kicks in,” a friend of the duke told the Sunday Times.
“He’d like an invite to Sandringham. Would he go? It would depend on who was there. If the King was to say, ‘Come up and spend some time with the family’, he’d love that.”
The situation has limited family contact in recent years.
Harry has seen the King only twice in the past two years, including a brief meeting in September.
The pair last met on September 10 for around 50 minutes at Clarence House while the duke was in London for charity work.
Despite that, communication has continued.
The King and his son have spoken several times, though they did not meet during Harry’s most recent visit in January.
King Charles, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, traditionally spends part of the summer at Balmoral but is also known to stay at Sandringham in July.
The duke’s children have not visited the UK since 2022.
Harry’s position remains tied to the outcome of the government review into his security status.
The Royal and VIP Executive Committee is expected to determine whether enhanced protection will be granted.
“There is not a world in which he brings the kids back unless there is an enhanced security package around them,” a friend of Prince Harry’s told the Sunday Times.
“If the King wants to see the kids, all he needs to do is invite them over and it can happen.
“There are lots of scenarios to make it work, but it’s all out of Harry’s hands. No father would want to put their kids at any risk.”
The review process is ongoing, with government officials consulting multiple stakeholders before making a final decision.
When in the UK, Harry currently relies on privately funded security.
Police protection is only provided during official events attended at the request of the King.
The duke has previously said he wants his children to spend time in Britain and understand their family background.
His return in July will include events linked to the Invictus Games and his work with the WellChild charity.
