When Selena Gomez announced her engagement, her longtime friend Taylor Swift volunteered to be her flower girl. Now, Swift is at the wedding in Santa Barbara, arriving at the airport where she was photographed making a discreet entrance. Page Six shared photos of Swift dodging the press under a canopy of black umbrellas on September 26.
On September 27, the Daily Mail reported that Swift is staying at Rosewood Miramar in Montecito for the weekend and that she arrived at the rehearsal dinner in a convoy of SUVs. It doesn’t appear as though Swift was joined by her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, likely because the NFL star has a game on Sunday at Arrowhead, which means a curfew on Saturday night.
Swift and Gomez have been friends for over 16 years. In August, Gomez reflected on how they met as teenagers during an interview with Therapuss.
Turns out, they were dating different members of the Jonas Brothers at the same time: “I dated Nick, and she dated Joe,” she said, noting they didn’t know what they were doing, but they are on good terms with Nick and Joe Jonas now.
“She and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other because it was really sweet,” she said. “I was about 15. She was about 18. And that’s when it was the crazy curly Taylor. She had all these bracelets that went all the way up.”
Gomez recounted the special introduction to Swift’s music she got at the time: “I believe ‘Love Story’ was the first song she had ever played me. It wasn’t released yet. It was in a hotel room, and I remember it vividly….It was one of those songs I instantly heard and thought, This is one of the most beautiful songs ever. So at that age, we became best friends, bonded over the breakup, as girls do. Then we just stuck around for all the ups and downs that came after. And here we are now, 16 years later.”
Swift [last/recently] attended Gomez’s 33rd birthday party in July and gifted the singer and her husband, Benny Blanco, a homemade loaf of sourdough.
In January 2020, Swift gave rare comments on their friendship, telling WSJ magazine, “There has always been this quality of sisterhood, and I don’t say that in a basic way. I knew from when I met her, I would always have her back. In my life, I have the ability to forgive people who have hurt me. But I don’t know if I can forgive someone who hurts her.”
