Disney/David Astorga Justin Long as Mr. Nathan Bratt in season 1 of 'Goosebumps'

Key Points

  • Disney+ has canceled several of its original series since January.

  • Notable titles affected include Extraordinary, Shardlake, Marvel Studios: Assembled, and Goosebumps.

  • Official reasons for the cancellations are in short supply.

A shake-up appears to be happening at Disney+.

Since January, the platform has surprised fans with an unexpected wave of cancellations, with the streamer pulling the plug on at least four original series. Considering some of the axed shows were fan favorites, the lack of explanation provided for the cancellations has been dismaying for viewers.

Here’s every Disney+ original reportedly canceled in 2025, and what (if anything) the stars and creators have said in response.

Goosebumps

In early August, Disney+ canceled Goosebumps after two seasons, according to Variety. No official reason for the cancellation has been shared, but reports suggest that Sony Pictures Television, which produces the series, is looking “to shop the show to other outlets and explore different creative directions for the IP.” Reps for Disney didn’t respond when asked for comment.

Based on R.L. Stine‘s spooky children’s horror books, the supernatural anthology debuted on both Disney+ and Hulu in October 2023.

The first season introduced fans to a group of five high schoolers drawn together by the mysterious death of Harold Biddle (Ben Cockell), a teenager who died 30 years earlier. As they dig deeper into the case, the pack begins to uncover chilling secrets involving their own families.

The second season, titled Goosebumps: The Vanishing, premiered in its entirety on Jan. 10, 2025. This chapter focused on a pair of twins played by Jayden Bartels and Sam McCarthy who spend the summer at the Brooklyn home of their father (David Schwimmer).

Soon, the twins and their friends sneak into a creepy, long-abandoned fort said to be haunted, only to stumble into a decades-old mystery involving four missing teens and a whole lot of trouble.

As of this writing, none of the cast members have publicly discussed the cancellation. However, Schwimmer previously gushed about the series to Entertainment Weekly, saying he was “in awe of the tone” and commended producers Rob Letterman and Nicholas Stoller for making viewers “feel safe while you’re getting scared.”

In a surprising move, Disney+ has reportedly pulled the plug on Marvel Studios: Assembled.

The streaming service never made an official announcement, but it’s been indicated that the behind-the-scenes docuseries, a companion to many major MCU releases, has been quietly shelved, with no new episodes in development anytime soon. Reps for Disney didn’t respond when asked for comment.

The final installment, which delved into the making of WandaVision (2021) spinoff Agatha All Along (2024), premiered on Nov. 13, 2024.

Since then, Marvel has debuted a number of high-profile projects, including Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Captain America: Brave New World, Daredevil: Born Again, Thunderbolts*, Ironheart, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Eyes of Wakanda. None have received the Assembled treatment.

On Jan. 17, Disney+ announced that the British superhero comedy Extraordinary would not be returning for a third season.

“Disney+ Original series Extraordinary will not be returning for a third season on the service,” a spokesperson for the platform said (per Variety). “We’re so proud of the hilarious, award-winning series brought to life by the incredibly talented British and Irish cast and crew, our production partners at Sid Gentle Films, and the exceptional writing talent of creator Emma Moran.”

The series, which ran for two seasons between January 2023 and March 2024, was set in a world where everyone gains a superpower at the age of 18 — except for Jen (Máiréad Tyers), who finds herself still waiting to receive a power years later. The season 2 finale ended on a major cliffhanger, which is bound to upset invested fans.

Though the cast and crew have yet to publicly address the cancellation, creator Emma Moran has moved on to her next project: a Netflix adaptation of Bella Mackie’s 2021 novel How to Kill Your Family, with Anya Taylor-Joy set to star in the lead role.

On the same day it announced Extraordinary‘s cancellation, Disney+ also confirmed that its historical mystery series Shardlake would not return for a second season.

“Disney+ Original series, Shardlake, will also not be returning for a second season on the service,” the service said. “We’d like to thank Stephen Butchard who adapted the late C.J. Sansom’s beloved novel for the screen, the entire cast — led by the outstanding Arthur Hughes — and crew, and our production partners The Forge and Runaway Fridge. We hope to work with all of our partners across these shows again in the future.”

Anthony Boyle, who played John “Jack” Barak on the show, confirmed the cancellation on his Instagram Story. “Sadly, Shardlake won’t be coming back for another season,” he wrote (via Metro). “Thanks for all the love and support on it. First season still on Disney Plus UK.”

The four-part series, which premiered in May 2024, transported viewers to back to the 16th century. Set during the dissolution of the monasteries, the show centered on hunchback barrister Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) as he’s dispatched by Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) to investigate the suspicious death of a commissioner at a secluded monastery in Scarnsea.

While Disney+ has not provided a reason for the show’s cancellation, Shardlake was well received by both audiences and critics. The series maintains an 81% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and boasts a 75% audience approval rating.

Ahead of the February 2025 premiere of Win or Lose, Pixar’s first-ever long-form animated show, buzz circulated about a potential follow-up series in development. However, Disney+ reportedly canceled those plans, and no official details about the new show’s concept were ever shared.

The reasons behind the potential cancellation remain unclear, though TheWrap reported that there’s a possibility the project could be reimagined as a feature film.

Win or Lose focused on the Pickles, a co-ed middle-school softball team preparing for their championship game.

While the series was generally well-received, it faced some controversy for cutting a transgender character’s storyline.
