In their 17 years of friendship, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift have also become billionaires with wildly successful careers. At Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit yesterday, Gomez revealed a pivotal piece of business advice the Life of a Showgirl singer once gave her.
Fortune’s Ellie Austin asked Gomez what the two stars have learned from each other. The Rare Beauty founder demurred when reflecting on what she has taught Swift.
She called the singer “one of the most brilliant people I’ve ever met. She is very strong in her lane, and she gives great advice all the time. I’m not sure what I would say I’ve done for her other than been there as a friend, but one thing that stuck out to me, and I’ll always remember it, but she said, ‘If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.’ And that’s why I surround myself with really incredible people. There’s no dumb questions; you have to learn and not be afraid of all the things that you might lose out on.”
The two friends just enjoyed a special milestone event together: Gomez’s wedding, where Swift gave a speech. Gomez shared photos of them at the celebration, writing, “In honor of SHOWGIRL .. blessed to have you by my side almost 20 years later gator! I love you @taylorswift forever and always.”
Ten days ago, Swift spoke on The Tonight Show about what she did—and didn’t—say in her reception speech, along with her impressions of Gomez on her wedding day.
“Well, I got to see her be the most elegant, gorgeous, not only bride, but just vision that I’ve ever seen in my life,” Swift said. “I’ve never seen anything so beautiful as her on her wedding day. And she deserves all this happiness. Benny [Blanco, Gomez’s husband] is—he’s him. He’s so funny. He’s the best. So I did make a speech, but I actually made a point not to mention anything about my engagement [to Travis Kelce].
“Nobody wants you to be like, ‘Hey, I know this is your wedding day, but I’m [engaged]!’” she added. “You know, I was like, don’t mention it. Maybe turn it [the engagement ring] around, you know what I mean? This is her day. I did do some light teasing about the way that we used to dress in 2008, the year that we met, because you know, we were teenagers and 2008 was quite a year, let me tell you. And so I talked a little about 2008, and I talked about how happy I am for her and just how beautiful it’s been to get to be a part of her life, but I did not make it about me.”
