Selena Gomez is adding another major film project to her résumé, this time teaming up with Oscar-winning actor Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender for director Brady Corbet’s next movie—a mysterious “X-rated” epic that is already generating attention at the Cannes Film Festival.
According to Variety, news of the project surfaced after Blanchett revealed during a Cannes masterclass that she was preparing to work with Corbet on his next feature. Multiple outlets later confirmed that Gomez and Fassbender had also joined the cast. Plot details remain tightly under wraps, but Corbet previously described the film as “really, really genre-defying” and said the story spans from the 19th century to modern times, while largely centering on the 1970s.
The untitled film is also expected to be on a massive scale. During an appearance at the Storyhouse Screenwriting Festival in Dublin last month, Corbet said the screenplay runs to roughly 200 pages. For comparison, his previous film, The Brutalist, was based on a 165-page script and ultimately clocked in at more than three hours.
Corbet’s comments about wanting to make an “X-rated” film have only fueled curiosity around the project. The director is reportedly shooting with rare eight-perf 65mm cameras, continuing the visually ambitious style that has become part of his reputation following films like Vox Lux and The Brutalist.
For Gomez, the role marks another major step deeper into prestige filmmaking after spending the last several years balancing music, television, beauty entrepreneurship, and increasingly serious acting work. She has steadily expanded her film résumé since appearing in Spring Breakers. Most recently, she starred in Emilia Pérez, which earned her the Best Actress prize at Cannes, alongside Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Adriana Paz.
At the same time, Gomez has remained firmly planted in pop culture headlines outside of acting. In recent months, she and her husband, Benny Blanco, have repeatedly gone viral for their increasingly candid public appearances and social media posts.
Gomez recently referred to herself as “Mrs. Blanco” on Instagram while sharing intimate photos from their married life, following weeks of internet conversation surrounding Blanco’s Friends Keep Secrets podcast and the couple’s unusually open discussions about their relationship.
