“Shameless” alum Cameron Monaghan is set to star in an upcoming “Bosch” prequel.
Monaghan, who rose to prominence as Ian Gallagher on “Shameless,” will play the titular character in “Bosch: Start of Watch.” The new series will center on a 26-year-old version of Harry Bosch, the detective created by crime fiction writer Michael Connelly.
“Unbelievably excited for this new chapter of my life and career. This is a great script and can’t wait to immerse myself in this project,” Monaghan wrote via Instagram to celebrate his casting.
Omari Hardwick will play Bosch’s training officer, police veteran Eli Bridges. Set in 1991 Los Angeles, “Bosch: Start of Watch” follows the young detective as he is “drawn into a high-profile heist and a web of criminal corruption testing his loyalty to the badge.”
“Bosh,” the first series based on Connelly’s character of the same name, aired on Prime Video from 2014-2021 with Titus Welliver in the starring role. A sequel titled “Bosch: Legacy” came to an end in April after three seasons, and a spinoff titled “Ballard” premiered in July. “Ballard,” which stars Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard, has been renewed for season 2.

Connelly called the new “Bosch” prequel “uncharted territory,” as he’s never written a novel about young Harry Bosch.
“I’m deeply grateful to [Head of MGM+] Michael Wright and the team at MGM+ for championing this next chapter in Bosch’s journey with such remarkable care and integrity,” Connelly said in a statement. “Being able to see how Harry Bosch became the man we have loved for 10 seasons is a gift to me and his many fans. I can’t wait to dig in with Cameron and the writers.”
Just like the beloved adult character, young Bosch is described as “a stoic, unyielding young man, [who is] intensely observant.” A description for the new series notes that “young Harry possesses all the qualities that will come to mark his legendary career: he’s smart, relentless, determined, [and] fiercely protective of the victims of crime.”
A premiere date for “Bosch: Start of Watch” has not yet been announced. “Bosch” is available to stream on Prime Video.
