Hitmaker Shania Twain, who often gets candid with fans, revealed that she still considers “You’re Still the One” one of her favorite songs, even though it was originally written with her ex-husband, music producer Robert “Mutt” Lange.
Speaking with ETalk in a TikTok video originally shared on YouTube on August 11, the country star discussed the 1997 hit and her relationship.
“Well, I’m not just saying this because it seems obvious, but ‘You’re Still the One’ really is one of my favorites to do live,” Twain said.
She explained, “I’ve gone through quite a few stages with that song of, not really even wanting to sing it live for a while, just thinking, ‘Well, okay, I’m divorced now, does it really mean what it used to mean when I wrote it?’”
Twain now has a “newfound appreciation” for the track and says she “has for a while.”
“It’s mostly fans, fans love it, they want to hear it. It means so much to them in so many ways. They’re either getting married to it, or have been married to it, or had an anniversary, or a friendship, or whatever it is. It’s more the meaning that it is, or that it represents, to everybody else that makes it so meaningful to me again,” she explained.
The Queen of Country Pop, also gave an update on her upcoming album, saying, “It’s going to be different than maybe what anyone is expecting. There’s a lot of storytelling in this album.”
“You’re Still the One” was nominated for four Grammy Awards in 1999, taking home Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

It also earned nominations for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. The song spent 42 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching number one on May 2, 1998, where it stayed for two weeks.
Twain and Lange were married from 1993 until 2008 and share 24-year-old son Eja. Twain has been married to Frederic Thiebaud since January 2011.
Twain discussed the challenges of being “put in a box” by the music industry, fans, and executives. “If I feel like I’m being put in a box, I start to panic,” she said to People. “I run in any direction I can because I don’t want to be contained. I have to be able to find my own way.”
She added, “Sometimes I’m not even sure where I’m going myself. How can somebody else tell me that, right? So I need the freedom to explore and to land wherever that exploration takes me.”
“I’m always championing anybody that does things that are unexpected by the industry, or unexpected by the audience. They may not have seen it coming, but the artist does have a sense of where they want to go exploring, and I really think it’s wonderful that they do, that they explore it, and they take it to whatever limit interests them,” she said.
