Shaun White and Nina Dobrev “grew apart” before news broke of their split, Us Weekly has learned.
“There was no drama here. No cheating was involved,” a source tells Us exclusively of Dobrev, 36, and White, 39. “They were loyal to each other their entire relationship. At the end of the day, they’re human beings, just like everyone else. They genuinely just grew apart and realized they would be better off just as friends and not husband and wife.”
People was the first to confirm on September 11 that Dobrev and White had called it quits after five years together. The pair announced their engagement in October 2024.
According to a second insider, the duo were already in the process of planning their nuptials when they decided to end their relationship.
“They had finally started planning the wedding and things were in motion,” the second source explains, adding that Dobrev has been leaning on her friends for support. “It’s still very fresh, but she’s been supported by her closest girlfriends who have been checking in on her.”
Us Weekly reached out to Dobrev and White’s reps for comment.
White gushed to Us about his relationship with Dobrev in 2021, a year after they began dating.
“We have a nice little system of how to stay in touch,” he said. “Plane tickets are pretty much booked for any opportunity that we can go see one another. So, I know during the holiday break, we’re going to meet up, and we’re going to meet up again probably around Christmastime. Anything that happens in between, then I’ll jet over and see her. You just make it work.”

White made his first TV appearance since he and Dobrev called off their engagement on the Today show on Tuesday, September 16, but didn’t discuss the breakup, instead giving viewers a peek at what he will be up to as the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, approach.
“I’ll be running around, definitely supporting my friends competing and just taking it in,” said White, who is a three-time Olympic gold medalist snowboarder himself. “This will be my first Winter Olympics where I’m not competing, so a lot of feelings there, but honestly, I’m excited to support and check it out.”
“My first Olympics was in Italy that I competed at, so this is bringing a lot of memories going back to Italy. Should be fun,” he added.
