The Shepherdstown Film Society is set to kick off its fall season Sept. 5 with a screening of “Babette’s Feast” and a pre-film reception.

The season will feature four films, each shown on the first Friday of the month through December, according to a community announcement.

The screenings will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Shepherdstown Opera House, 131 W. German St. Admission is pay-what-you-can, thanks to individual sponsors.

Film lineup offers variety

The lineup includes “Babette’s Feast,” an Oscar-winning classic; “Flow,” an animated film about a cat’s journey after a flood; “Universal Language,” a satirical comedy; and “Wicked Little Letters,” a mystery comedy set in a 1920s English seaside town.

A post-film discussion, a signature feature of the Film Society, will follow each screening. Shepherd University professor Rachel Krantz will lead the discussion after “Babette’s Feast.”

Reception planned before first screening

The pre-film reception for “Babette’s Feast” will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature light fare with a French flair.

“The Film Society’s goal is to select and show ‘Films That Make You Think,’” Film Society Chair Sheila Vertino said in the announcement. “The Fall 2025 Season delivers on that promise and will be fun and memorable for our community.”

Reservations encouraged

Reservations are encouraged due to limited seating. They can be made online at operahouselive.com until one hour before showtime. Seating is general admission.

The Shepherdstown Opera House, built in 1910 as a vaudeville theater, has been updated to provide a modern experience for artists and audiences. It hosts live music, film, plays, lectures and private events.
