Making her first start following an unfruitful trip to Royal Ascot this spring, Shisospicy dominated rivals when back on home turf Saturday in the $2-million AGS Music City (G2) for 3-year-old fillies at Kentucky Downs and stamped herself a horse to watch for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1).
A dismal 15th in the Commonwealth Cup (G1) June 20 at the royal meet, the Mitole filly rebounded with aplomb and tallied by three lengths over stablemate Cloe in topping the exacta for trainer Jose D’Angelo.
Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. Shisospicy finished the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:14.54 and returned a win mutuel of $8.42.
Tabiti (GB) was third in the Music City’s field of 12. Favorite Kilwin was fourth.
When called upon near the five-sixteenths pole, Shisospicy quickly moved ahead of Gata Brazil, who had pressed the speedy filly from the outside in the early stages of the Music City. The race was settled at that point as none of the others in the field of 12 was able to muster a late challenge in the run through the stretch following opening fractions of :21.83 and :44.58.
D’Angelo said he felt confident entering Saturday’s test because Shisospicy ran such a big race in the Mamzelle (G3) (winning by 4 1/4 lengths) May 10 at Churchill Downs prior to departing for Great Britain, and Cloe performed creditably on Santa Anita’s 6 1/2-furlong downhill turf course, finishing third in the Senorita (G3) in late April.
He said Shisospicy will be pointed to the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) against males, and Cloe will run in an undercard stakes at a mile against fillies.
“Shisospicy at five furlongs on the turf, she’s so fast,” he said, adding that the filly was unlucky at Royal Ascot.
“That’s why I took my time, gave her enough time to prepare for this race, and she responded very well.”
Shisospicy, who is campaigned by Morplay Racing LLC and Qatar Racing, Ltd. was bred in Kentucky by Bill Heiligbrodt and Corine Heiligbrodt. Her dam is the Into Mischief mare Mischief Galore.
