In space, no franchise ever stays dead. Even with Alien: Earth’s massive cliffhanger finale dominating the conversation, the possibility of luring Sigourney Weaver back to the role of Ellen Ripley is always a promising prospect. The actor herself seems to be in that very mindset at the moment, as she revealed that there are some very early moves being made that could make it all happen.
As an attendee of New York Comic Con 2025’s panel celebrating the 1979 classic (Via EW), Weaver probably shocked the crowd with what she had to say – which included the following:
“Walter Hill is a very good friend of mine and he wrote 50 pages of where Ripley would be now and they are quite extraordinary. So I don’t know if it’s going to happen, but I have had a meeting with Fox — Disney, or whoever it is now.”
Some of you out there are probably flashing back to that time when Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5 was a going concern; and don’t worry – I’m definitely one of you. That example was also invoked in this discussion, as Sigourney Weaver used it to further explain why she is so bullish on coming back to the franchise that helped put her, and the Xenomorph (last seen in both 2024’s Alien Romulus, as well as this year’s Alien: Earth), on the map as sci-fi icons.
What’s even more exciting is Ms. Weaver’s enthusiastic report came with promising details on what the story of this proposed Alien return would entail. Justifying her excitement in that enlightening context, the franchise legend had this to say:
“Except for Neill [Blomkamp], I’ve never felt the need to reprise the role. I was always like, ‘Let her rest! Let her recover! But what Walter has written is so…first of all, seems so true to me. It’s very much about the society that would incarcerate someone who has tried to help mankind, but she’s a problem to them so she’s tucked away. “
That’s a vague description, to be sure. However, my guess is that if this Alien project happens, we’ll be seeing Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection being wiped from the canon – much like Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5 was set to do. And instead of suspended animation keeping Ellen Ripley in one place for several decades, it appears that prison is what will be keeping her from every day life.
It’s a curious case that I hope we learn more about in the near future, but in the meantime let’s place our bets on what happens first – a Season 2 announcement for Alien: Earth (which you can catch up with through a Hulu subscription), or an official start on development for Sigourney Weaver’s dream project described above.
