Get ready to don your crowns: “SIX” is coming back to the Providence Performing Arts Center this October.
The show, which The New York Times said “totally rules,” tells the stories of Henry VIII’s six wives, who famously met fates of “divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded and survived.” The pop show bills itself as a “euphoric celebration of 21st-century girl power.”
“It’s a spectacle,” said performer Abigail Sparrow. “It will have you on your feet.”
If you want to party with six queens, here’s what to know about the upcoming seven shows, which will be in Providence from Wednesday, Oct. 22, through Sunday, Oct. 26, as part of the Encore Series.
What is ‘SIX’ about?
The North American touring company of “SIX” will be on stage at the Providence Performing Arts Center from Oct. 22 to 26.
“SIX” gives the wives of Henry VIII – Catherine of Aragon (played by Emma Elizabeth Smith), Anne Boleyn (Nella Cole), Jane Seymour (Kelly Denice Taylor), Anna of Cleves (Hailey Alexis Lewis), Katherine Howard (Alizé Cruz), and Catherine Parr (Tasia Jungbauer) – the microphone to tell the story of their marriage, or the end of the marriage, from their perspective.
The show is famous for its pop style, as the sound of each of the queens is based on current pop icons. The pop stars who inspired the show include Beyoncé, Avril Lavigne, Adele, Rihanna, Ariana Grande and Alicia Keys.
While the music is enjoyable, the content explores themes such as heartbreak, beauty standards, double standards for men and women, loss and more.
“It’s all about lifting each other up and being there for each other,” said Sparrow, who is an alternate for three of the queens. “And the show kind of delves into some deeper topics, too, that, I think, are relatable for a lot of different kinds of people. And maybe they can see their stories reflected in the queens’ stories, and to watch someone on stage go through that.”
How long is ‘SIX’?
SIX is a short show. It’s only 80 minutes without an intermission, making it a fast-paced party at the castle.
