Slimmed-down ESSENCE Fest lineup could ease delay issues

ESSENCE Festival of Culture returns to New Orleans this weekend, bringing three days of music, conversations and celebrations of Black culture to the city.

The annual festival, which has called New Orleans home for nearly three decades, is featuring performances from artists including Babyface and Cardi B, along with appearances from former First Lady Michelle Obama and hundreds of speakers, vendors and exhibitors at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

According to New Orleans & Company, projected hotel occupancy is down slightly compared to last year’s festival weekend. Hotel occupancy is expected to reach 53.4% on Thursday, compared to 60.1% last year. Friday is projected at 80.3%, down from 81.6%, while Saturday is expected to reach 82.4%, compared to 83.8% in 2025.

Those figures don’t necessarily reflect ESSENCE Festival attendance alone. Two other conferences are taking place in New Orleans this weekend, also contributing to hotel bookings across the city.

Entertainment reporter and festival expert Keith Spera of The Times-Picayune says several factors could explain why attendance may not reach previous highs.

“One of the problems this year is there’s no one big superstar talent that is driving attendance. You don’t have a Beyoncé, you don’t have a Janet Jackson, an Usher, a Chris Brown. Those are the stadium-size acts that really drive ticket sales, and this year, for a variety of reasons, they don’t have that really big headliner,” Spera said.

Spera also believes some festivalgoers may still be thinking about challenges from last year’s event, including concerts that ran well behind schedule and changes to the fan experience that some attendees said were not clearly communicated. Still, Spera is optimistic that changes made this year will improve the overall experience.

He says organizers have reduced the number of performers scheduled each night, allowing for a more manageable concert lineup and potentially fewer delays.

“I think some people were a little upset at how last year flowed and everything ran so late. So maybe people are giving it a year or two to see how things go before they come back,” Spera said. “I am optimistic. They slimmed down the lineup a bit this year, so they’re not trying to pack in eight acts a night. It’s more like five, which I think is a more reasonable lineup for the festival.”

Beyond the concerts, Spera says ESSENCE continues to offer experiences that set it apart from other music festivals.

“You don’t see other major festivals having a former first lady conducting a conversation on the main stage between music acts,” he said.

Whether attendance ends up slightly lower or exceeds expectations, ESSENCE Festival is once again expected to fill New Orleans with music, culture and conversations that have made it one of the city’s signature summer events.
