Buying shares in the best businesses can build meaningful wealth for you and your family. While not every stock performs well, when investors win, they can win big. For example, the SM Entertainment Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:041510) share price is up a whopping 310% in the last half decade, a handsome return for long term holders. If that doesn’t get you thinking about long term investing, we don’t know what will. In more good news, the share price has risen 14% in thirty days.

Since the long term performance has been good but there’s been a recent pullback of 7.0%, let’s check if the fundamentals match the share price.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the five years of share price growth, SM Entertainment moved from a loss to profitability. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here. Since the company was unprofitable five years ago, but not three years ago, it’s worth taking a look at the returns in the last three years, too. We can see that the SM Entertainment share price is up 56% in the last three years. In the same period, EPS is up 43% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 16% average annual increase in the share price over the same three years. Therefore, it seems the market has moderated its expectations for growth, somewhat. This cautious sentiment is reflected in its (fairly low) P/E ratio of 8.79.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

It is of course excellent to see how SM Entertainment has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. If you are thinking of buying or selling SM Entertainment stock, you should check out this FREE detailed report on its balance sheet.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for SM Entertainment the TSR over the last 5 years was 327%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

SM Entertainment shareholders have received returns of 70% over twelve months (even including dividends), which isn’t far from the general market return. Most would be happy with a gain, and it helps that the year’s return is actually better than the average return over five years, which was 34%. Even if the share price growth slows down from here, there’s a good chance that this is business worth watching in the long term. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
