Model Miranda Kerr revealed that her husband, Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel, has a surprising stance on screen time when it comes to their children.
“My husband is very anti-screens for the young ones,” Kerr said on Monday’s episode of “The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast.” “Because that’s the way he was raised.”
Kerr said that she and her husband have compromised, however, and that on weekends or for a “special occasion,” she will curl up with the kids to watch a movie.
“But that’s, like, the extent of the screen time,” she said, before acknowledging that her 7-year-old has played Minecraft.
Kerr, who was on the podcast to promote her skin care company KORA Organics, shares a 14-year-old with her ex-husband, actor Orlando Bloom, and has three sons, ages 7, 6 and 1, with Spiegel.
She said she has parental controls on her 14-year-old’s phone and that he doesn’t have social media besides Snapchat, an app with disappearing messages. He was allowed to have Snapchat when he was 13, Kerr said.
It’s “the only way he communicates with his friends,” she said. “They don’t really text. They just snap each other all day long.”
Kerr then plugged Snapchat’s features, including Family Center, which allows parents to monitor their kids’ activity, and The Keys, a guide to digital safety. Spiegel is featured in a video on Snapchat’s website in which he says the guide is meant to “educate families about online risks.”
On the podcast, she also spoke about the importance of routine for her family, saying that she and the kids eat dinner at 4:30 p.m. and that during the winter, they are in bed by 6:30-7 p.m.
Spiegel, who created Snapchat in 2011 with some classmates at Stanford University, married Kerr in 2017.
Social media sites and apps, including Snapchat, have been accused of contributing to anxiety and depression in young people, as well as body image issues. Snapchat’s photo editing features can trigger body dysmorphic disorder, or what some call “Snapchat dysmorphia,” according to a 2018 study by Boston Medical Center. Snapchat has also been at the center of lawsuits regarding revenge porn, the sale of fake pills, and child grooming.
