Saturday Night Live failed to pay tribute to one of the show’s former musical guests during tonight’s episode.
Saturday’s Sabrina Carpenter-hosted show surprisingly ended with no mention of R&B legend D’Angelo after his death earlier this week.
SNL regularly displays tribute cards for past hosts and musical guests who have died near the episode’s airdate. Those honored in the past include Val Kilmer, Matthew Perry, Quincy Jones, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, and more. Notably, last weekend the show paid tribute to Diane Keaton, who had never appeared on SNL.
The “Untitled (How Does It Feel?)” singer, who helped usher in the neo-soul movement of the ’90s, died on Oct. 14 at age 51 following a private battle with pancreatic cancer.
The Grammy winner served as musical guest on SNL not in his 1990s and early 2000s heyday, but on Jan. 31, 2015, to support his critically acclaimed comeback album, Black Messiah.
The musician performed the songs “Really Love” and “The Charade” on the season 40 episode, hosted by J.K. Simmons. During his powerful second performance — which came months after the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner — D’Angelo’s backing band and vocalists wore “Black Lives Matter” and “I Can’t Breathe” shirts.
Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for SNL to ask about the omission.
One Direction singer Liam Payne was similarly not mentioned on the show following his death in October 2024, after performing three times as musical guest and appearing in sketches with his bandmates.

In a statement to Entertainment Weekly following his death, D’Angelo’s family wrote in part: “We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”
