The 2025 Primetime Emmys went down this weekend and the night was yet another opportunity for Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar to add more hardware to their all-time career years. Though they each did walk away with awards, SNL 50: The Anniversary Special played spoiler in one specific category.
The Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category was stacked; K. Dot’s Apple Music halftime show at Super Bowl LIX, Queen Bey’s halftime performance on NFL Christmas Day live on Netflix, The Oscars, SNL50: The Homecoming Concert, and SNL50: The Anniversary Special were all in contention. However, it was the 50th anniversary celebration of the long-running late-night television program that took home the award on Sunday (Sept. 14).
“I won this award for the first time 50 years ago, in 1975,” Lorne Michaels, the show’s executive producer, said when accepting the award. “I was younger and I had a lot of dreams — and not one of those dreams was that I’d still be doing the same show for the next 50 years, however here we are. I want to thank NBC and Comcast for their support. The show was two years in the making.” Notably, he actually won the award in 1976, making it 49 years ago, but still an awesome full-circle moment nonetheless.
The Compton rapper and Ms. Carter didn’t leave empty-handed, though. The GNX artist won an award at the Creative Arts Emmys last week for Outstanding Music Direction. As for Bey, she won her first Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Costumes For Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Programming for Beyoncé Bowl.
These achievements join a monumental year for both acts, who took home high-profile awards at the GRAMMYs in February. Lamar nearly swept the Rap category and won Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year, all for “Not Like Us.” Bey won Best Country Album and her long-awaited Album Of The Year recognition for Cowboy Carter.
