Sophie Grégoire Trudeau says she is focused on emotional honesty while navigating life after her separation from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
In a recent appearance on Arlene Is Alone: The Single Life, a podcast hosted by Canadian business leader Arlene Dickinson, Grégoire Trudeau spoke about parenting, mental health, and her response to public interest in her former husband’s relationship with Katy Perry.
“We’re human beings and stuff affects us. That’s normal,” she said in response to her former husband’s new romance with Perry.
“How you react to stuff is your decision… The woman I want to become through this is my decision.”
Grégoire Trudeau, 50, and the prime minister, 53, announced their separation in August 2023 after 18 years of marriage.
The former television host said she continues to experience strong emotions, but works to stay grounded.
“Does it mean that I don’t have emotions? That I don’t cry, scream, laugh? No. Especially that I’m a super tender heart,” she said.
“But it’s my decision after that between the emotion and the reaction. I let myself feel.”
“I’ll let myself be disappointed by someone. I’ll let myself be angry, be sad. I know for a fact how important it is as a mental health advocate to feel those emotions.”
She also addressed how she and the prime minister are raising their children – Xavier, 18, Ella-Grace, 16, and Hadrien, 11 – after the split.

“I’m definitely not a single mom. I have a partnership with a father who has such deep love and availability to his children,” she said.
“We call each other up. We’ll text each other… We will really try to build cohesion, so that the kids feel that cohesion… We have separate lives, but we have one family life.”
Dickinson praised Grégoire Trudeau’s composure in public, especially amid speculation about the prime minister’s personal life.
“I don’t know how you stay cool… I really admire it because I would probably not be that way,” Dickinson said.
