Wicked: For Good The Soundrack is hitting shelves the same day as the film’s theatrical release, Republic Records and Verve Records announced Wednesday morning.
The album, which will be released on Nov. 21, will feature songs from act two of the stage musical and second part of the feature film adaptation by Jon M. Chu, along with three new additions. Academy Award-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz has written two new songs for film’s finale, which will be featured on the soundtrack alongside a previously unreleased song from the original Broadway musical.
The two new songs are “No Place Like Home,” performed by Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, and “The Girl in the Bubble,” performed by Ariana Grande as Glinda. “The Wicked Witch of the East,” which has always been part of the stage musical but was not included on the Broadway cast recordings, will also be featured on the soundtrack and will be sung by Marissa Bode, Erivo and Ethan Slater.
“I’m especially happy that the soundtrack album for Wicked: For Good has so much new music on it. In addition to two brand new songs, there is a lot that’s new in several other existing songs,” Schwartz said in a statement. “Not only listeners coming to the score for the first time, but long-time fans of the original Broadway cast album, will have a great deal to discover.”
Wicked: For Good features some of the stage musical’s biggest moments including Glinda’s beginning of the act song, “Thank Goodness / I Couldn’t Happier,” Elphaba’s “No Good Deed” and the iconic duet from which the film’s name comes from, “For Good.” The tracklist also included “Every Day More Wicked,” “Wonderful,” “I’m Not That Girl (Reprise),” “As Long As You’re Mine” and “March of the Witch Hunters.”
The soundtrack for ’Wicked: For Good’ will be released the same day as the film.
Republic Records and Verve Records
The soundtrack, which is available for pre-order, is being released in several formats including CD, double vinyl, double picture disc and digital. Target, Amazon, Walmart and Barnes and Noble will all have exclusive versions of the album.
Wicked: For Good — the official title was announced Dec. 16 — will see the witches of Oz, Grande’s Galinda, aka Glinda the Good Witch, and Erivo’s Elphaba, aka the Wicked Witch of the West, continuing where the story ended with the first film.
The second act of Wicked‘s stage musical takes a darker turn from the bright poppy moments in the first act. “Defying Gravity,” in both the stage musical and film, serves as the moment that Elphaba “transforms” into the Wicked Witch of the West that Wizard of Oz fans know, with the added context that the Wizard and her mentor, Madame Morrible, played in the film by Michelle Yeoh, respectively, have branded her “wicked” after she refused to help their plot to strip rights away from the animals in Oz. Elphaba and Glinda, who spent the first act and film becoming friends against all odds, go their separate ways as Elphaba chooses to rebel against the Wizard and Glinda stays behind.
Schwartz had previously confirmed to THR that new songs were expected for the film’s second part. “They were written because they were necessary for the storytelling. It’s why there isn’t a new song in the first movie because we didn’t need one,” he said. “They’re an important part of the story.”
