Sphere Abu Dhabi is officially on the way — and it might just become the Gulf’s boldest entertainment landmark yet. Inspired by the viral success of the Las Vegas Sphere, the UAE capital has unveiled plans for its own colossal immersive venue, marking the first Sphere project outside of the United States.
Expected to open by the end of 2029, the futuristic arena will rise on Yas Island between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, placing it right at the centre of Abu Dhabi’s ever-expanding entertainment district. Backed by a US$1.7 billion investment from the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the venue is set to accommodate up to 20,000 spectators.
More than just a concert venue, Sphere Abu Dhabi is being envisioned as a next-generation immersive space where live music, cinematic experiences, combat sports, and large-scale digital productions collide. Much like its Las Vegas counterpart, the venue will feature a massive LED-covered exterior known as the Exosphere — transforming the structure itself into a giant visual canvas visible across the city skyline.
Officials have also shared plans to spotlight Emirati culture and regional creatives through original immersive productions and large-scale digital art installations. According to Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, the project aims to become a platform for Emirati storytelling “on the grandest stage ever built.”
The announcement further cements Yas Island’s growing reputation as a global entertainment hotspot. Already home to attractions including Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the island is also preparing to welcome a Disney theme park resort in the coming years.
For Sphere Entertainment Co., the Abu Dhabi project signals the start of a wider international expansion. Executive Chairman and CEO James L. Dolan described the UAE capital as a “natural home” for the next generation of Sphere venues.
Since opening in Las Vegas in 2023, the original Sphere has become one of the world’s most talked-about entertainment spaces thanks to its immersive visuals, curved LED interiors, and viral exterior displays. Now, Abu Dhabi is betting big on bringing that same spectacle to the Middle East — with a distinctly regional identity at its core.
If completed on schedule, Sphere Abu Dhabi could become one of the decade’s defining entertainment landmarks: part concert hall, part digital art installation, and part sci-fi fever dream.
