Spotify Messages: A New Way to Share Music

Spotify has listened to its users. They want a dedicated space within the app to share what they love with friends and family. They also want an easy way to keep track of those recommendations. Starting this week, Messages is rolling out for Spotify Free and Premium users aged 16 and older in select markets.

Sharing recommendations has always been one of the core Spotify experiences. Every month, millions of users exchange music, podcasts, audiobooks, and other content. This happens because word of mouth remains one of the most authentic ways to discover what could become your next obsession.

Everything You Share, All in One Place

Whether recommending an audiobook for a book club, talking about a newly discovered song, or exchanging history podcasts with your father, the right recommendation can spark meaningful conversation. Messages allows you to share and chat quickly and directly about what you’re listening to with the people who matter to you.

For creators, this feature opens new possibilities. More people can spread their music, podcasts, or audiobooks, increasing the chances of discovery and fostering new cultural connections around their content.

How Messages Work

Messages are one-on-one conversations where you can share Spotify content and react with text or emojis. From the Now Playing view, simply tap the share icon, select a friend, and send. Once the request is accepted, you can reply with messages, emojis, and seamlessly share content back and forth.

Access Messages from the top-left corner, next to your profile picture. The app also suggests contacts you’ve interacted with through Jams, Blends, collaborative playlists, or family plans. This makes starting a conversation feel natural.

Spotify maintains integration with other platforms. For example, you can still share content on Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, or TikTok. Messages complements these options without replacing them, offering a dedicated space within the app.

Control and Safety

With Messages, users are always in control. You can accept or reject requests, report inappropriate content, block users, or turn off the feature in Settings. Conversations are protected with state-of-the-art encryption, both in transit and at rest. Additionally, the platform combines proactive detection and content review to ensure a safe environment without compromising user privacy.

This is just the beginning. Spotify plans to continue developing and refining this experience, including features like Messages, for more users around the world.
