Several actors are heading to a galaxy far, far away as production begins on Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Starfighter.
On Thursday, the production company unveiled the full cast of its upcoming feature film from Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, joining previously announced stars Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith and Mia Goth. Starfighter’s star-studded cast will include Flynn Gray, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
Details on most roles are still being kept under wraps but Smith and Goth have been revealed to be two of the film’s villains.

“I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter,” Levy said in a statement. “From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally.”
He added, “Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”
Production celebrated the start of filming with a photo on Instagram showing Gosling and Gray on set with a caption reading, “Day 1: A whole new adventure begins #Starfighter”

The all-new standalone adventure features a script by Jonathan Tropper, and is produced by Levy and Kathleen Kennedy. Gosling, Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen, and Josh McLaglen also serve as executive producers.
As explained at the Star Wars Celebration event in April, while Starfighter takes place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, it is not connected to previous Star Wars movies or characters from the beloved Skywalker Saga — the films revolving around Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), his twin sister Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) and their father, Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen).
At the celebration event in Tokyo, Japan, Levy and Gosling later took to the main stage to tease their new collaboration.
“This is the perfect place to start this journey for us, because it’s such an incredible reminder of why we’re going to make this movie and who we’re going to make this movie for,” Gosling told the Celebration audience at the time.

Levy added, “This is a standalone. It’s not a prequel, not a sequel. It’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet.”
Gosling noted that the film’s “script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters.”
Levy was in talks to direct a Star Wars film as early as 2022. Starfighter now joins an as-yet untitled trilogy set outside of the Skywalker Saga to be helmed by Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg.
Starfighter will be released theatrically May 28, 2027.
