Stephen Colbert offered what he called a “predictable answer” when asked which person’s body he’d slip into for 24 hours.
“I would slip inside the skin of our president and I would resign,” said the “Late Show” host with a chuckle during Slate’s “Political Gabfest” 20th anniversary show last month.
Colbert, a frequent Donald Trump critic who’s faced repeated attacks from the president, told former CBS Evening News anchor John Dickerson there’d be “no scandal” and “no confession” upon his imaginary resignation as Trump.
″[I’d] just go, ‘It’s been great, I’m a wonderful — I’m the best ever. I’m going to go out on top, I’ve done everything. I’m just going to go,’ that’s it. It can be a glorious ending. Just end it,” he added.
Moments after New York Times Magazine staff writer Emily Bazelon suggested there could be a problem if people find out about Colbert’s bodily takeover, the “Late Show” host chimed in with a “harrowing follow-up question” about Trump.
“Is he taking over my body for those 24 hours?” the comedian quipped.
Elsewhere during the Slate event, Colbert agreed that he and Dickerson, who recently bid farewell to the CBS Evening News desk along with co-anchor Maurice DuBois amid the network’s rightward tilt, should “do something together” following their years at CBS.
The “Late Show” is set to come to a close in May after CBS decided to cancel the program last year, a move widely seen as the network caving to political pressure despite its insistence that it was “purely a financial decision.”
Colbert said he wants to take time after the late night program “to learn something that I didn’t know before, to do something I’ve never done before.” He told Dickerson that he knows what he wants to do but declined to reveal what it is.
Earlier in the event, he told the crowd that he “understands” why people want him to run for president in 2028 before noting that he’d have to discuss such a bid with his faith leader and family to see if, once his CBS program comes to a close, he “could be of some greater service to this nation that I love so much.”
