All smiles as he stepped out in a sandy-colored suit and striped tie, the out-of-work late-night host’s outfit seemed tailored to troll conservatives who lost it when President Barack Obama wore tan slacks and a matching jacket during a 2014 press conference about military action in Syria.
Though Obama’s summer attire seemed fairly standard for a swampy August in Washington, D.C., then-congressman Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) claimed the “unpresidential” look was beyond inappropriate for a discussion about terrorism abroad.
Other conservatives seized the chance for some faux outrage, with late Fox News juggernaut Lou Dobbs telling viewers the suit was “shocking to a lot of people.”
It wasn’t long until Republicans lost control of the conversation, and the pseudo-scandal became both a punchline and an example of the excessive scrutiny Obama faced.
What some remember as #KhakiGate actually got multiple nods during Wednesday’s opening of the Obama Presidential Center.
When Obama Foundation Chair Martin Nesbitt took the stage wearing taupe, the president gave him a hug and a compliment, then took a seat and chirped about how “sharp” Nesbitt looked.
