Stephen Colbert took a swing at the president’s unexpected White House roof press conference during his opening monologue on Tuesday’s episode of The Late Show.
In a surprising turn of events, Donald Trump was spotted clambering onto the White House roof through an open window on Tuesday morning for what was described as an “inspection” before the construction of the new White House ballroom kicks off in September.
Caught on camera, the president could be seen pacing the rooftop and hollering unintelligibly down to reporters. Colbert highlighted the oddity of the situation by noting that one journalist had to ask, “Sir, why are you on the roof?”—a question not commonly directed at global leaders.
Colbert entertained his viewers with a recount of Trump’s peculiar antics atop the White House. “At one point, the president tried to communicate through hand signals of some kind,” he recounted.

The construction of the ballroom is set to commence next month and aims for completion within Trump’s term.
The ambitious $200 million endeavor is said to be financed entirely through donations.
