“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert on Thursday teased Pete Hegseth with a blast from the past after the Pentagon’s watchdog found the defense secretary’s use of the Signal messaging app risked “potential compromise of sensitive DoD information, which could cause harm to DoD personnel.”
First, Colbert recapped how Hegseth used the app to share highly sensitive war plans in a text chain that included Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic. A new report from the Pentagon’s acting inspector general argued that Hegseth’s actions could have led to “failed U.S. mission objectives and potential harm to U.S. pilots.”
“That’s surprising. Usually, to endanger the lives of American troops, Hegseth uses an ax,” Colbert quipped as he aired a throwback clip of the former Fox News host hurling an ax on live TV and hitting a member of the West Point Hellcats marching band. The man later sued Hegseth.
The “Late Show” crowd reacted to the clip with a massive groan.
Colbert also questioned how much longer Hegseth will remain in his post.
