Matthew Modine has starred in several seasons of Stranger Things as Dr. Martin Brenner, the research scientist who runs a secret government experiment at Hawkins National Laboratory.
Dr. Brenner is known for raising Millie Bobby Brown’s character Eleven, who refers to him as “Papa”, but Modine himself had a very impressive filmography years before he even starred in the hit Netflix series.
Back in 1987, he portrayed a very different character in Vietnam war film Full Metal Jacket.
The 66-year-old played US Marine, Sergeant J.T. Davis in the film, which tells the story of how Marines progress from their basic training camp to facing the horrors of the Vietnam War.
Modine was just 26-years-old when he starred in the flick, and throughout it he is seen in military fatigues and dons spectacles – a world away from the smartly dressed grey haired older man he portrays in the Netflix show.
“During tea breaks dust was always settling on the cakes and biscuits, floating on top of our tea. God knows how much we ingested and what effect it’s had on our bodies.”
Modine is also set to star in upcoming movie Zero Day with Robert De Niro, which drops on Netflix in February 2026.
De Niro takes on the role of a revered former United States president who is enlisted by Angela Bassett’s current president Evelyn Mitchell to head up the Zero Day Commission, tasked with investigating a nationwide cyberattack.
The Netflix mini-series delves into the aftermath of a catastrophic cyberattack that claims thousands of lives and threatens to push an already teetering nation over the brink. Granted extensive powers, which are labelled “an affront to civil liberties”.
Modine is also set to appear in mega monster movie Godzilla x Kong: Supernova in 2027 alongside Jack O’Connell.
