Making the Ohio State Marching Band: TBDBITL members share the process

Ohio State Marching Band members share stories of their journey to join the band.

  • Cello duo Empire Wild will perform in Columbus as part of the nonprofit chamber music recital series Sunday at Central.
  • Sunday at Central is celebrating its 30th season of presenting free classical music concerts.
  • The 2025-26 season includes four performances recommended for ages 9 and older.

To the uninitiated, the cello might be seen as the awkward, uncool cousin of the violin. But in reality, it’s a uniquely versatile instrument that’s been used across multiple genres.

In addition to its starring role in compositions by the “three B’s – Bach, Beethoven, Brahms – and many other composers, the cello has been used by pop artists from The Beatles to Panic! at the Disco.

It’s also the instrument of choice for Empire Wild, two cellists who blend pop, folk and jazz into their works. Featuring Juilliard-trained Mitchell Lyon and Ken Kobota, the duo will perform at 3 p.m. Nov. 9 at Broad Street Presbyterian Church, 760 E. Broad St.

The concert is part of Sunday at Central’s “Where Are They Now?” series spotlighting emerging musicians with ties to Columbus. Kubota grew up in Columbus and took part in Chamber Music Connections, a local chamber music workshop for middle and high school students.

The performance comes at the beginning of Sunday at Central’s 2025-26 season, its 30th year of presenting free, first-rate classical music. The season will continue with:

  • “Highs and Lows”: Tatiana Hanna (violin), Kenichiro Matsuda (violin), Pei-An Chao (cello), and John Pellegrino (bass) playing works by Gioachino Rossi and Anton Arensky; 3 p.m. Jan. 18, Ohio History Center, 800 E. 17th Ave.
  • “Ravel and Turina”: Amy Licata (violin), Eva Herer (cello) and Mariko Kaneda (piano); 3 p.m. March 22, Broad Street Presbyterian Church
  • “Lyrical Reflections”: Jeffrey Myers (violin) and Mariko Kaneda (piano), playing Violin Sonata in E-flat major, Op. 18 by Richard Strauss and other pieces; 3 p.m. May 31, Broad Street Presbyterian Church

Performances are recommended for ages 9 and older. Seating is first-come, first-served. Free parking is available.

Sunday at Central concerts are recorded and can be viewed later at youtube.com/sundayatcentral.

Founded in 1995, Sunday at Central is a nonprofit chamber music recital series that offers intimate traditional chamber music concerts by internationally recognized professional musicians. For more information, visit sundayatcentral.org.
