A superheor film based on a classic 1960s Tv series has been branded as ‘the worst movie of all time’ by fans, despite its star cast.
With the movie name ‘The Avengers’. this might make people think of the Marvel superhero franchise, yet it’s not the same and instead a very different plot. The film follows a charismatic evil genius named Sir August de Wynter (Sean Connery), who discovers a way to harness the weather and utilise it as a weapon against London and the world at large.
Secret agents John Steed (Ralph Fiennes) and Emma Peel (Uma Thurman) are on the case, but then Peel is implicated in the sabotage of a government scientific experiment. Steed and Peel try to clear her name, while also trying to stop de Wynter for good. With a star cast including award winning actors Sean Connery, Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman, it has all the makings of being a brilliant film and entertaining – yet the fan reviews say something different.
On Rotten Tomatoes, one review said: “It was like watching the director, producer and writers take a long, big shit all over my beloved British mod series. Possibly the worst movie of all times.” Another said: “IT IS THE WORST MOVIE THAT HAS EVER BEEN MADE!” “A movie has to be pretty bad for me to give it one star. I’m not one of those people who either loves or hates everything, and everything is either five or one stars. (I hate those people though). Most movies are 2,3, or 4 stars, unless they really and truly stand out. This movie deserves its one star,” said a third.
A fourth posted: “Total misfire. The TV series it’s based on is still well regarded. This mess is done in by a terrible script, awful pacing, and poor casting decisions. Warner Bros. released this did the year after “Batman & Robin.” Yuck.” “One of the worst movie I’ve ever seen!” said another. Others revealed they couldn’t even finish it, as one person said: “I chanced upon a streaming service that allowed me to watch this 1998 The Avengers starring Fiennes, Thurman, and Connery. Mid-way I stopped watching it.
“The story was lame, the acting much too contrived, and the plot was utterly incoherent and forgettable.” Another added: “I had to turn it off , seems from the review a lot of people did . The acting and pacing was to uncomfortable for me gave me a headache.” A third posted: “Proof that the wrong actors with the wrong script in a film made by the wrong people is inevitably doomed to fail, and what a disappointment. As a super fan of the classic ’60’s British TV show, this film is an abomination and an insult to fans of the original program. Shameful.”
The Avengers airs on ITV4 on Saturday 10 January at 5.05pm.
