(ABC 6 News) — It’s a big weekend in Clear Lake as the legendary Surf Ballroom marks a new chapter in music history.
The Surf Ballroom is one of just four music venues in the nation recognized as a national historic landmark. It is famously known as the last stage for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper before their tragic plane crash.
It’s been a place for music lovers to come together for more than 90 years, and now, what was once the site of rock and roll’s greatest loss, is now a place where it’s legacy will continue to grow as the Surf Ballroom unveils a new music center that celebrates the legends who played their final show in Clear Lake.
The highlight, Not Fade Away, is an immersive theater experience that takes visitors inside the birth of rock and roll through sound, light, and history.
“This project is really about bringing to life, not only the stories of those three young artists tragically lost in 1959, but also the entire evolution of American music,” said Brian Luallen, the CEO and consultant of the Surf Ballroom.
The new 10,000-foot music center gives fans a front row seat to the sights, stories, and sounds that changed American music forever.
It is right next door to the Surf Ballroom and features historical artifact exhibits, rooms for youth music programs, and a fully immersive experience meant to be enjoyed time and time again.
“Different people can experience it very differently, depending on where they stand, where they look, so it becomes a much more individual experience, and one that you can repeat again and again and again,” said Kirsten Holmes, the co-founder and executive producer at Trivium Interactive, the company that created the new immersive content.
For interested rock and roll fans, admission to the Surf Music Experience center is free through September 7. Events are running all weekend long, including live performances, student tours, and a ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday afternoon.
