Sydney Sweeney has stated that her appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival will not include any discussion of her American Eagle jeans ad.
In a conversation with Vanity Fair ahead of her film Christy’s premiere, she emphasized that her focus is entirely on the project and the team behind it. Sweeney said, “I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it, and I’m not there to talk about jeans. The movie’s about Christy, and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about.”
The comments follow backlash that began in July after American Eagle released an ad campaign with the slogan “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” The slogan, intended as a play on words, was widely criticized for its resemblance to “good genes.” Many accused the phrase of using racially charged language connected to eugenicist rhetoric.
The backlash grew as the campaign circulated on social media, sparking debate over whether the phrasing was careless or deliberate. Despite the criticism, Sweeney herself has not made any public statements about the matter. Instead, American Eagle addressed the reaction directly, releasing a statement on August 1.
In the statement, American Eagle stated, “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
With the discussion still swirling around the campaign, Sweeney has placed her focus on Christy. In the biographical drama, she plays the real-life role of boxer Christy Martin.
