“If it’s the first week of my album release and you are saying either my name or my album title, you’re helping.”
That was Taylor Swift‘s line during her interview with Apple Music host Zane Lowe about the controversy surrounding her latest album, The Life of a Showgirl. And wouldn’t you know it? Taylor Swift knows a thing or two about the music business.

The singer’s 12th studio album debuted less than a week ago, but it has already claimed the record for the highest-selling week of the streaming era.
Billboard broke the news this morning, five days after The Life of a Showgirl became available to the public. That was all the time Swift needed in order to rack up 3.5 million equivalent album sales, according to Luminate. That bests Adele‘s seven-day total for 25, which bowed to 3.48 million copies sold in 2015.
Swift’s first week total for Showgirl won’t be officially tallied until Oct. 9, so there’s still time for that seven-day record to climb higher.
The 3.5 million figure for Showgirl combines data from both 3.2 million physical and digital album sales, as well as 300,000 equivalent sales — a figure calculated based on streams on ad-supported or paid subscription services.
As of publication, and with time still left in the week, Swift is still shy of Adele’s physical and digital sales record from 25. That record debuted with 3.38 million copies sold in the first week, a figure Showgirl is quickly approaching but has yet to surpass.
Swift will have to wait until Monday to see how The Life of a Showgirl and its lead single, “The Fate of Ophelia,” fare in the Billboard charts. Both the Billboard 200 album chart and the Hot 100 are currently ruled by Huntr/x of KPop Demon Hunter and their sensational “Golden.”
