Taylor Swift Explains How ‘Honey’ Turns Pet Names Into Power Moves

Taylor Swift is giving fans a taste of what makes “Honey” one of the most personal and pivotal tracks on her new album, “The Life of a Showgirl.” During her record-breaking “Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” event at AMC Theatres over the weekend, the pop icon revealed how the song helped shape the direction of her entire record, turning once-painful words into something unexpectedly sweet.

Swift told her fans that “Honey” was one of the very first songs she wrote for the album, and it immediately signaled she was entering new creative territory. “‘Honey’ is one of the first songs that we made for this record,” Swift shared. “It’s when we knew we were really going into new territory, because it just feels different than things we’ve made before.”

She continued, “It was the first song that made us feel like, ‘Oh, this is a whole new album, yes, let’s follow this.'” The song’s energy, she explained, helped set the tone for the bold, genre-bending sound that defines “The Life of a Showgirl.”

From Sarcasm To Sweetness

Swift also revealed that the inspiration for “Honey” came from a surprisingly sour place, her experiences with pet names used as thinly veiled insults. “I got the idea for the lyric based on the times I’ve been called ‘honey’ in my life, and it was usually like, ‘You can’t pull that off, honey,’ or ‘I wouldn’t try that, honey,'” she said. “It’s done in this sort of passive-aggressive, critical way.”

That observation became the emotional core of the track: how words meant to sting can be repurposed into something tender when they come from love instead of judgment. “If somebody calls you honey sincerely, it turns out it’s awesome,” Swift laughed. “I take a lot of those pet names that sometimes in culture become weaponized, like, ‘Not a good look, sweetheart,’ and I wanted to explore how different they feel when someone actually means them kindly.”

Ultimately, “Honey” captures one of the album’s central themes of transformation. Swift said the song reflects how someone new can enter your life and change the meaning of words, memories, and emotions that once hurt.

“It’s about having had experiences in the past that were cynical and cold and mean,” she explained. “Then somebody comes into your life and repurposes those same exact words, turning them sweet, and it feels so good.”

During a recent radio interview, Taylor Swift revealed that her 12th studio album was such a closely guarded secret that even her record label didn’t know about it until it was completely finished.

The Grammy-winning artist told BBC Radio 2 host Scott Mills that the project, released on October 3, was created in total secrecy by her in-house team, who waited until the artwork was finalized and the music was ready for distribution before sharing it with the label. “The album was actually a surprise for my record label,” Swift admitted. “We kept it under wraps until everything, the visuals, the songs, the rollout, was ready to go.”

Swift explained that she prefers to keep her creative process private so the final product feels like a true moment for fans. “I really want my music to be a surprise for my fans,” she said. “And I like finding clever, fun ways to deliver those surprises so it feels like entertainment.”

Of course, no Taylor Swift release would be complete without a few hidden meanings sprinkled in. The singer joked about her signature “Easter eggs,” saying they’re there for those who want to dig deeper, but optional for casual listeners.

“If you don’t need Easter eggs, then you can disregard that,” she laughed. “You don’t need to do math if you don’t want to, but if you want a little extra layer of entertainment, I like to give people that. That’s why we’re so shrouded in secrecy.”
