Taylor Swift recently released “The Life of a Showgirl.” Since then, fans have been analyzing and dissecting all the tracks, trying to figure out which prominent figures in her life the pop icon has referred to. The track “Father Figure” has garnered much attention, as Swifties believe it takes a jab at Scooter Braun. The duo has a tense history, boiling down to Braun’s purchase of the master’s rights of Swift’s first six albums in 2019. The 35-year-old finally reclaimed the rights earlier this year.
Taylor Swift’s ‘Father Figure’ track appears to take a dig at Scooter Braun
Fans believe that certain lyrics in Taylor Swift’s” Father Figure” from her new album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” take a swipe at both Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta.
The lyrics in question are: “I’ll be your father figure/I can make deals with the devil because my d**k’s bigger/This love is pure profit/You made a deal with this devil, turns out my d**k’s bigger…you pulled the wrong trigger/This empire belongs to me/Leave it with me.”
The “devil” in question is presumably Braun. However, fans believe most of the lyrics refer to Scott Borchetta.
“Father figure being about scott borchetta makes so much sense,” a user wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “And yet i never saw it coming.”
“Imagine signing a young talent, promising her to be a FATHER FIGURE and then betraying her in the worst way possible,” another shared. “Yeah, scott borchetta doesn’t get enough lashings for what he did.”
Braun acquired the rights to Swift’s first six albums in 2019 via Ithaca Holdings’ purchase of Big Machine Records. The purchase amounted to an estimated $300 million.
The “Bad Blood” singer subsequently shared on Tumblr that she didn’t get a fair opportunity to reclaim her masters, accusing Braun of “incessant, manipulative bullying.” She also noted that while she made peace with Borchetta selling her albums, she never imagined in her “worst nightmares” that the buyer would be Braun.
“Father Figure” is the fourth track of “The Life of a Showgirl.” It bears the same name as George Michael’s 1987 single. The late English musician has received songwriting credit, despite having nothing to do with the song’s creation.
