It’s arguably the most anticipated album in music since Taylor Swift’s last, and it’s no surprise the pop star’s expansive fanbase are already behaving like they have been presented the bible for the first time.
Releasing her 12th album on Friday, titled The Life of a Showgirl, the 35-year-old’s latest project promises a look “behind the curtain” of her epic Eras tour that travelled to 51 cities across 21 countries.
Just minutes into the release, Swifties have labelled it the “album of the decade”, with endless comments and memes celebrating the moment that’s been on her fans’ lips since the release date was announced on her fiance Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast in August.
Upon the album drop, Swift told her 282 million Instagram fans, “I can’t tell you how proud I am to share this with you, an album that just feels so right. A forever thank you goes out to my mentors and friends Max and Shellback for helping me paint this self portrait.”“If you thought the big show was wild, perhaps you should come and take a look behind the curtain…”
Within 25 minutes, the post had been liked an astonishing 1.5 million times.
On X, where comments are free to run wilder than Swift’s younger heart, the flood of hyperbolic commentary has hit like a flood.
“I LOVE YOU WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU AND THIS ALBUM IS EVERYTHING AND WE ARE GOING TO BE STREAMING FOREVER THANK YOU,” The Eras Tour fan page commented.
“I’m literally shaking right now,” one fan wrote, with another referring to Swift as simply, “MOTHER”.
Other internet users found humour in placing the album cover in the hands of famous historical figures, such as former US President Bill Clinton, or beloved Friends character Chandler Bing.
The album features 12 songs, with her title track The Life of a Showgirl seeing her team up with gal pal and tour partner Sabrina Carpenter.
Carpenter has already pointed fans in the direction of her mate’s new work, telling followers “it’s out”, and sharing a photo of the pair embracing while on tour with the caption, “I love you Taylor”.
The New Heights podcast joined in the fun, invoking an iconic scene from Mean Girls to embrace the release.
“Happy release day to all who celebrate,” the page captioned the post, framing its sibling hosts Travis and Jason Kelce.
This week Spotify announced The Life of a Showgirl had become the first album in history to exceed 5 million pre-saves, breaking the previous record held by her last album, The Tortured Poets Department.
