Taylor Swift’s friendships have always been as headline-making as her hit songs, But lately, the harmony among her famous inner circle seems to be hitting a few sour notes.
Swift’s recent launch of her album, The Life of a Showgirl, may have rubbed one of her A-list besties the wrong way. The Daily Mail is reporting that her friendship with Ed Sheeran is “strained” — and it has everything to do with her music.

Sheeran released his eighth studio album, Play, on Sept. 12, a move that was announced back in May. In August, Swift revealed her 12th album was on the way with an Oct. 3 release date. The “Shape of You” singer was reportedly upset that his pal chose a date so close to his launch.
“Ed takes these things really seriously and carefully plans his album releases. He announced his album with four months’ notice, but then Taylor announced hers for just two weeks after,” a music industry source told the U.K. media outlet. “It left his team scrabbling to get as much attention before hers dropped. He was very much put out and understandably peeved.”
The insider also claims that it was “not the first time that Taylor has done something like this” to a fellow musician. There is an alleged feud between Swift and Charlie XCX over the 35-year-old singer’s decision to “chart block” Charlie’s Brat album. Swift released an album variant of The Tortured Poets Department to keep her music at the top of the Billboard charts.
Swift and Sheeran have been friends since their 2012 collaboration, “Everything Has Changed,” which led to him going out on tour as her opening act. His time in Nashville also cemented their friendship, but lately it seems that the dynamic in the relationship has shifted.
During a Sept. 24 appearance with Andy Cohen for SiriusXM’s Small Stage Series concert, the TV host asked the 34-year-old singer how he learned of Swift’s engagement to Travis Kelce.
“Instagram,” Sheeran said.
“You didn’t even get a DM in advance?” Cohen responded in a bit of shock.
“No,” Sheeran added while noting he also did not know when the wedding was scheduled.
Swift defended herself during her Oct. 6 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as to why she didn’t tell Sheeran ahead of the headlines about her engagement.
“He doesn’t have a phone,” she said. “This is one thing I love about him. It’s very eccentric. Love it. But when I’m going through, saying, ‘Hey, who should we call? Who should we FaceTime?’ I’m going through my texts and being like, ‘Who have I texted within the last like, month of my life?’”
Swift continued, “You have to email him or FaceTime him, and he has to find an iPad, and they have to give it to him like he’s a child. This is one of my absolute favorite people on the planet. When the news came out, I was like, ‘We forgot to call Ed!’”
Sheeran seemed to downplay the feud rumors by commenting on Fallon’s TikTok page, “Hello from my allotted iPad time, this is factual.”
Perhaps Swift and Sheeran aren’t as close as they used to be, but it doesn’t seem like it’s a tumultuous situation right now. Sheeran’s tech preferences are obviously keeping him out of the Swift loop.
