‘A light gray sofa is a neutral in the truest sense – it doesn’t compete for attention. That means the rug, the art, or a strong decorative piece gets to be the thing you actually notice when you walk into the room,’ comments Alexander Dahlgren-Jawad, principal at The Ancon Group.
‘I use gray most often when a room already has a scene-stealer – a bold sofa, a striking chair, a piece of art that needs the space around it to stay quiet. Not every seat in the room needs to be the soprano. Every great performance needs strong background performers,’ he explains.
‘Practically speaking, gray also just wears well. It hides daily life – pets, kids, wear – better than most colors, which is part of why it’s stuck around while so many other ‘of-the-moment’ colors have come and gone.’
