Heartbreak has inspired countless songs, but Teddy Swims is taking the idea in a fresh direction. On his new single, “Break Up in Reverse,” the singer imagines what it would be like if a relationship could be undone in reverse, turning one of the toughest chapters of his life into an emotional new release.
Swims shared just how close the song is to his real life.
Turning Pain Into a Song
For Swims, whose real name is Jaten Dimsdale, writing the song became a way to process everything he was experiencing.
“Upon writing this song and my next album, I’ve been going through it with my relationship with my baby’s mother (Raiche Wright) coming to an end,” Swims explained. He was inspired by an old Nas song called “Rewind.”
“So we thought, how beautiful would it be if we took the same idea but wrote it about my relationship,” Swims added.
That idea shapes every part of “Break Up in Reverse.” Instead of telling the story from beginning to end, the song imagines a world where a breakup slowly disappears until two people are back where they started.
“I wish we could break up in reverse / Every night would get better instead of getting worse / I’d watch you slowly slip back into my hands / Say goodbye to me in the beginning / And love me in the end,” he sings.
The music video brings that concept to life. Swims begins in a room filled with broken furniture and smashed belongings while looking heartbroken. Because the video plays in reverse, everything slowly repairs itself until the room is whole again, matching the song’s wish that a broken relationship could be rebuilt.
Looking Back on Love
The lyrics also include personal references to Wright, including a nod to her hometown.
“You’d be on your way back from Massachusetts / Bet it breaks the hearts of stars when we use ‘em as excuses,” he sings.
Swims and Wright were first spotted together at a Grammys pre-party in February 2024, though they had actually met earlier. During a January 2025 interview with the BBC, Swims said they first crossed paths “a couple of Thanksgivings ago” when Wright attended one of his concerts.
He appears to revisit that memory in another lyric from the song.
“Could wish upon a stranger, even though we know it’s useless / ‘Cause all I want’s the night back when your best friend introduced us.”
Heartbreak and Fatherhood
Even before releasing the song, Swims had been open about how his personal life was influencing his music.
“I’m going through a bit of a situation with my baby mother,” Swims, admitted of his relationship with Wright. “A little heartbreak going on.” Still, “it’s gonna be rock and roll man,” he said.
Although the breakup has been painful, Swims has found comfort in being a dad. He and Wright welcomed their first child, a son, in June 2025, and he said fatherhood has helped keep him grounded.
“I’ve got a 10-month-old and he’s the sweetest kid in the world,” he previously said at the event. “Trying to make everything not about being a dad is the hard part because nobody wants to hear nothing but dad tunes.”
While his relationship has come to an end, Swims is clearly turning that experience into music that feels honest and relatable. After breaking through with the chart-topping hit “Lose Control,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2023, and earning Grammy nominations in both 2025 and 2026, the singer is showing that some of his most personal stories may become his most powerful songs yet.
