The last time I spoke with former Royals speedster Terrance Gore was in 2022, shortly after he signed with the New York Mets.

Gore, who died Friday at the age of 34, joined New York in the hopes of securing a fourth World Series ring. He got one with the Royals in 2015, the Dodgers in 2020 and the Braves in 2021.

Despite appearing in just 112 regular-season games, Gore was with teams that made the playoffs six times. His incredible speed on the basepaths made Gore a weapon during the postseason.

In our final conversation, Gore spoke about his love of playoff baseball.

“It never gets old. It’s just an adrenaline rush,” Gore said. “I love the playoffs, the weather and the fans and being in such a critical game. Each and every pitch, you’re just so locked in. This is what a guy strives for. …

“I love it. I love the towels. I love the little (foam) fingers that certain teams give the fans and the media and all that stuff. I love every last bit of it. I know during the season, they always say like teams play as a family and yada yada yada, but I feel like we come together more in October. Like that’s when you really come together as a team.”

Like Gore’s relatives, his baseball family is in mourning following his untimely death. Eric Hosmer, Whit Merrifield and other former Royals teammates shared messages on social media about Gore.

Tragic news.

Was lucky to be around Terrance a bit with the 2022 Mets. He was such a light and will be dearly missed. https://t.co/5SU8ch0aGA

Cried when told this today and thought of that awesome smile and understated style he had. As a “not-so-secret” weapon, he hit the field when there was a need and always delivered. He’d act surprised when I told him the media had questions, but was always eloquent. Love ya T-Gore https://t.co/GSY5cHQfvO

So devastated to hear about the passing of Terrance Gore. I will forever remember his kindness and smile as much as his game-changing speed. #RIP #ForeverRoyal pic.twitter.com/iIfxcXEZQf

And here is what some of the teams Gore played for posted on X.
