Forget who actually attended Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding. The latest celebrity flex is revealing you could have been there.
Swift and Kelce pulled off what many dubbed America’s royal wedding, tying the knot on July 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York City before a reported 1,000 guests. Adam Sandler officiated the ceremony, while a guest list that reportedly included Julia Roberts, Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Lopez, Tom Hanks, Reese Witherspoon, Karlie Kloss, Emma Stone and Brad Pitt only fueled fascination around who scored one of the year’s most coveted invitations.
As Yahoo previously noted, the couple’s strict no-phone, no-social-media policy created an unusual post-wedding phenomenon: celebrities having to wait until after the festivities to share photos and memories from the celebration, posting like mere mortals once the event had ended.
Now, another unexpected trend has emerged.
Instead of talking about what happened at the wedding, a growing (and still expanding) number of celebrities are talking about why they weren’t there at all — while making sure everyone knows they were invited.
Shania Twain is the latest star to reveal why she had to miss the nuptials. The country superstar revealed she scored an invite to the wedding but had to decline because she was already committed to opening for Harry Styles during his London residency. Twain called missing the celebration “so unfortunate,” adding that she and Swift have become friends over the years and that she hopes to celebrate with the newlyweds another time.
The scheduling conflict came with an extra layer of irony: Styles, of course, famously dated Swift more than a decade ago.
“No, but I mean I would have done anything to be at Taylor’s wedding,” Twain told Canadian entertainment show etalk. “I would have done anything, and that would have been really lovely for me to be there — but I was with Harry.”
Another celeb who was forced to decline: Ryan Seacrest. During the July 6 episode of On Air With Ryan Seacrest, the longtime host revealed he had originally RSVP’d yes before work obligations forced him to back out. Seacrest explained that Disney had hired him to host its Fourth of July special, making it impossible for him to attend both events.
His story didn’t stop there.
Seacrest shared that after sending in his RSVP, he later ran into Swift at dinner, where she excitedly reminded him how much fun the celebration would be and that it would “go late.” He even joked that his cohosts discussed the wedding on air while he sat quietly, unable to reveal that he’d been invited because the guest list was meant to remain confidential.
In other words, Seacrest didn’t simply miss the wedding. He wanted listeners to know he had every intention of being there.
Then there’s James Taylor.
While performing his annual Independence Day weekend concert at Tanglewood in Massachusetts, the legendary singer casually mentioned that he and his wife had also been invited to Swift and Kelce’s wedding but couldn’t attend. Instead, Taylor took a moment to wish the newlyweds happiness and “smooth sailing.”
The revelation carried a little extra weight given the pair’s history. Swift has long said she was named after Taylor, and the two first met more than 15 years ago at a charity event, where the folk icon recalled being struck by the young singer-songwriter’s talent.
Finally, Charles Barkley delivered perhaps the funniest explanation.
Appearing on the Unfiltered With Ricky Bo & Bill Colarulo podcast, Barkley confirmed he had also received an invitation but “politely declined.”
His reasoning?
“I don’t go to weddings or funerals,” Barkley said, adding that while he loves Kelce and his brother, Jason, he’d rather spend the weekend playing golf than dressing up for what he suspected would be “a crap show.”
Still, he made sure to note that receiving the invitation itself was “pretty special.”
At this point, the guest list may never truly be finished. It’s just continuing to reveal itself one “I had to RSVP no” story at a time.
