The DCU is fully underway and there is already a substantial actor that deserves highlighting: Frank Grillo. Grillo plays Rick Flag Sr., the father of the fallen Rick Flag from The Suicide Squad. Rick Flag Sr. is the leader of the Creature Commandos as well as the head of government agency A.R.G.U.S. by the time of Superman and Peacemaker Season 2. It’s undeniable that Rick Flag Sr. is a crucial character at the start of James Gunn’s foray into the DC universe.
Frank Grillo has been doing an excellent job as Rick Flag Sr. in all the DCU projects he’s been a part of. He looks even better when you stop and remember he was also in the MCU. And with plenty of Rick Flag Sr. in the can at this point, it’s safe to say that the DCU has made up for the MCU essentially wasting Grillo in the larger scheme of things.
Frank Grillo In The MCU

In case you forgot, Frank Grillo played Brock Rumlow a.k.a. Crossbones in two Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. While I remembered his brief appearance in Captain America: Civil War, it was hard to even recollect his involvement in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He was very much one of those random character pulls from the comics for fans to gush over — “They’re finally using Crossbones! He’s always been my favorite forever and not just because he showed up in a movie!” — that ended up being completely unimportant for the actual character they used.
I’m sure there is at least one diehard fan of Frank Grillo in Captain America: The WInter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, so they won’t hear any of this. But I think anyone with a reasonable perspective can say that Frank Grillo was not utilized to his best during his time at Mickey’s House of Marvel. Seeing him in the DCU only strengthens that stance.
Frank Grillo In The DCU
Thanks to Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker Season 2, Frank Grillo has established himself as one of the faces of the DCU so far. Maybe he won’t make it out of Peacemaker Season 2 alive, but he’s already being given way more to chew on during his time in the DCU. Rick Flag Sr. is being positioned as one of the main antagonistic forces in Peacemaker Season 2, but not in a simplistic “bad guy” way. He’s still grieving over the loss of his son and it’s motivating his actions in a much more compelling way than anything Crossbones got to do in the MCU.
It’ll be interesting to see if any other major MCU actors make the jump to the DCU like Frank Grillo. It certainly looks like an upgrade for certain actors. Whether or not it will start attracting more familiar Marvel faces remains to be seen. But if I was a Marvel actor who felt they got the short end of the stick, I’d be asking my friends for James Gunn’s phone number.
